Overview
Whether your web site is personal or for your business, your Domain Name (or Internet Address, or URL) is the first thing that visitors to your site will see. Take the opportunity to make your site memorable and choose a domain name that is ''catchy'' and easily identifiable. You can have any number of domain names associated with your web site, so why not buy another domain name now. You may wish to regionalise your site, or have multiple domain extensions (e.g.. .com, .biz, .co.uk) to ensure that visitors will reach your site, or prevent competitors from registering your name (it's a lot cheaper than a lawsuit!). Choosing the right domain name is important, whether you intend to trade on line, just need a corporate presence, or your website is for pleasure. Domain names are allowed to be 64 characters long, including the extension (.com etc) and may contain letters, numbers and a hyphen (-). No other characters are allowed. Whilst long names are permitted, it is advisable to restrict the length as much as possible. Two main reasons for this are: Shorter names are easier to remember. Shorter names are easier to type and are less prone to typing errors. Another thing to remember is, that whilst domain registries make no distinction between upper and lower case, many web servers do and if you use capitals, in your web address, your visitors may not find your site. Choosing
Global Domains

.net, .org, .biz, .info, .name, .mobi and .eu. Registration is for 1 year.
.com is, probably, the most widely recognised domain extension and many people's
first inclination is to type www.yourcompany.com, before trying a search engine.
If you want international appeal, we recommend you register a .com domain.
.net started life as the extension for ISPs, but is now available as an
alternative to .com.
.org is usually associated with non commercial groups and can be a useful domain
for the charitable part of your business.
.biz and .name are relatively new extensions. the former is aimed at businesses
and the latter at personal websites.
.info & .mobi are also, relatively new and are intended to indicate information
sites and mobile friendly sites, respectively.
.eu is the latest addition which, obviously, implies a European based web site.
UK Domains
The three .uk extensions, whilst being available to anyone, are intended to
identify a website as business, personal and non-commercial, respectively.
Registration is for 2 years.
Regionalised Global Domains
The regionalised .com is another way to customise your Internet address and
increases the availability of the popular .com extension. Your preferred name
may not be available as a plain .com, so regional second levels are available.
Registration is for 2 years.
.cc is the Top Level Domain (TLD) for the Coco Islands, but it is, now, widely
used by businesses as an alternative to .com. Registration is for 1 year.
.tv is the TLD for Tuvalu, but is now widely accepted as the domain of choice
for multimedia web sites and Television associated companies. Registration is
for 1 year.
